There are lots of ways of doing this.  You could get an account 
somewhere like - www.nativespace.co.uk - for about £3.50 or £5 a 
month.  Very easy to do that.  Much quicker and easier than other 
ways.   If you are running a mail server you will probably need a 
backup MX record somewhere in case something goes down.  You can set 
up a DNS record here if you want to for a mail server....

Can't quite remember how to set up the DNS records and mailer software 
on the home machine but a quick search with Google will tell you 
everything you want to know.  See also...

Best software to use is Postfix or Exim4.   Plenty of documentation out 
there about how to configure and use either of these.
