My preferred option, which bypasses the need for managing servers &
keeping your computer on 24 hrs a day, but gives up a certain amount
of freedom for that simplicity, is the Google Apps for domain (
http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en/group/index.html ). For free you
get up to 50 accounts on a domain name (with webmail / POP3 / IMAP
access), plus docs, calendar, etc.

As I said, you give up quite a bit of control / freedom (in certain
ways), but gain a lot of convenience.
