Re: [Sheflug] Eee pc 4g Linking with Desktop

Hi Richard and Perry,

Your emails were a great help. It is amazing what you can research when you have the right words.

So I have found out that you can sync Thunderbird and Firefox.
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Synchronizing_mail_on_two_computers_%28Thunderbird%29
http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-sync-take-your-bookmarks-and-tabs-with-you

I have also discovered servers. Now I like the idea of servers (I think). I appears that you have a box as a server and other computers, pc's or laptops, netbooks can share files and folders across the server. This appears to be contained in the network you create in your home? Do I have any of this right?

I quite like this idea as it appears to be more secure in that it is contained in my home. Also for emails, they would all remain on my pc, but my netbook could be used for receiving and sending emails. All these emails would be on my pc.

I have just checked my .mozilla/firefox folder is 2.1 gb and my .thunderbird folder is 5.4 gb.

So if I had a server storage in the netbook wouldn't be a problem. Do I have this right.

But it appears that the server would have to be switched on all the time, which doesn't save any electricity. It also seems that you need a lot of different software to get a server working, it appears quite complex.

With the Firefox sync, it involves Mozilla's secure server. It sounds okay, there isn't much to hack from my internet browsing apart from my online banking.

The Thunderbird sync involves my ISP's servers, but my emails are already there, so they wouldn't be any less secure than they are now? The sync through Mozilla software seems easier to manage (but it always looks easy).

As you can see I am slowly driving myself crazy. I have taken the plunge and installed Bodhi on a USB 16 gb stick connected to eee pc. I used 5 gb for /, 1 gb for swap and left the rest for /home. I am still tweaking.

Also any comments on the memory upgrade. I am not convinced that Firefox and Thunderbird will manage with 512 mb ram. If that is the case, would I be better with 1 gb or 2 gb of memory?

Thank you for reading.

Regards

Janet
