Glad we've pointed you in the right direction.

I have taken the advice on point 1 - get IMAP-based account, namely
GMail from Google.

I use this Firefox Sync feature extensively, syncing across Windows,
Mac, Linux, and Android smartphone.

Yes, you can certainly have a 'generic' server in your home, say using
Linux. I used to do this for a while, but maintaining it become a
chore so I switched to specialized devices that act as a mini server.
For example for storing files I use a network drive, also called
network attached storage (NAS). I plug it to my home network, and it
is visible from all devices as a drive.

I have no comment on security other than as you pointed out your
emails are already on the ISP's server anyway. Mine is on Google's
servers.

That is correct, and access to the server when you are away from home
is even more difficult.

So I now use an Internet attached storage, that is the file server is
on the Internet, and all the files I need are uploaded there. This is
a service from Dropbox.

Firefox does require a lot of memory, 2GB is good.
