SMP in Linux

All,

I've used Linux a bit (Turbo Linux) while deciding BSD<->Linux.
You all prolly know which way I went. Anyway, my dual processor
box is feeling in need of conversion totally from BSD->Linux.
Any recommendations? Any advice?

The reason for this is that FreeBSD SMP isn't as good as
Linux (recent kernels) as BSD does this really wierd lock
that makes I/O a complete dog the moment SMP is active.

Any suggestions as far as distro that the cogniscenti say
has good SMP support? I'm not looking for bells and whistles
as the machine will be headless so it'll have bins of X
apps plus mostly custom stuff I have written (FEM analysis).

thanks

Chris
