I sorted out my soundcard using sndconfig. That set things right straight
away. Previously I had tried Lothar which looks very pretty and efficient
but failed completely to identify the IRQ of my Ensoniq card.

Checked last night, and Mandrake comes with sndconfig, the tool
that puts other OSs to shame :)
