When I had corel installed, I experienced the same problems.
Apparently, it builds a new XF86Config file every time you boot up.
Checks everything, but for one little thing: whenever you shut the
computer down, it gets rid of most of the symlinks in /dev. For some
reason, it fails to regenerate the symlynk to /dev/mouse. I don't know
whether it's been fixed, but well.... IT'S A MAJOR BLUNDER!!! Anyway,
not a very important thing, and probably fixed in the corel linux
website, I would have thought.

We'll assume the "logical side" is fine (isp's number, dns et
al). Corel usually gets this bit right IMO :)

It could definitely be that. How did you set it up? You should
have used something along the lines of setserial /dev/ttySX port $PORT
irq $IRQ ..., where the $PORT and $IRQ and the values you have set your
external modem to be. A good way to test this is to use minicom. Once
you fire it up, you wil get some line of cryptic commands with an AT at
the beggining, and then an OK if the modem is properly configured. Have
a look at setserial and at /proc/interrupts /proc/ioports, as some
IRQs/ports your modem likes might be used by something else.

	Best luck!
