I don't think it's as bad as a Winmodem!! The winmodem thing is not
necessarily bad design, often they're very well put together. It's a
design decision, rather than mistake, which is a completely different
kettle of fish.
Design of networks cards is a tricky business, though, esp. PCMCIA cards.
There's all sorts of things to contend with - extremely high voltages, for
example, are often the cause of NICs failing, in fact, probably the major
cause.
