Re: [Sheflug] Suse 7
Hi all, just my 2 penneth
I must admit I am quite disappointed that SuSE seem to have rushed into 7,
when neither Linux 2.4.x, KDE 2.0 or Gnome 1.2, not to mention XFree86 4.0,
are ready for using as primary 'whatevers' (desktop environment, kernel,
etc...).
I imagined SuSE 7 to include all of the above, and be released about
October/November time. Possibly December. I figured that the interim
release, SuSE 6.6 I presumed, would have the various updates which keep us
all ticking over, namely the 2.2.16 kernel, beta versions of KDE and Gnome,
as well as the stable ones (as with SuSE 6.0, which had an alpha version of
KDE for those who were interested).
On the subject of the Pro V Personal versions, I think it is a terrible
marketing move, if assumptions are true. These assumptions are:
The sever/pro version will not have as many of the little gadgety bits, like
games, multiple clocks, sproingies, and such, that make a boring day so much
more entertaining. It may also not have such things as Word Processors, and
other 'productivity tools'
The personal version will have less things like development tools (the
number of languages included with SuSE 6.4 is staggering, and welcome!)
RDMBSes (MySQL, PostgreSQL) and other 'server-centric' stuff, like apache,
inn, stuff like that. Or at least not to the same degree.
To be honest, one of the main reasons I stuck with SuSE from 5.2 is the
'everything-in-one-place' distribution. If I wanted productivity, I could
have it. If I wanted development, there it was. An http, ftp and nntp
server? There it was. Now it seems that to get all of this, you may have to
buy both, and, from what I heard, pay over the odds for it too.
Seems like my 'upgrade by new distro' days are running out, and I'll stick
to using my free internet connection (courtesy of cable) to download all
the new bits.
Cheers then,
Craig
