Aha! crossed wires obviously - you posted the message to the group before I
un-vacationed myself so I missed it. Anyway, now I'm up to speed again, I've
had a look at the archives and must thank all those who replied - most
useful. However, I still haven't managed to sort out the network problem.

1. As far as I can tell my Samba.conf file is OK in that it is virtually a
copy of one on another machine which does work OK and procinfo tells me its
OK. I think the problem is a bit more fundamental - I had a similar thing
once when I first started playing with linux but I can't remember what I did
to sort it. The symptoms are:-
I start up the linux machine - if I now try to 'ping' it from the windoze
one using the IP number, windoze says it can't see the linux box. If I now
'ping' the windoze box from the linux box, it works OK. Now, if I again
'ping' the linux box from the windoze one, if works fine - as though the
linux network card had to be woken up by linux before it will respond. I did
re-compile the kernel as the net card driver was only in as a module to
start with and I though that, if I made it a part of the kernel it might
work but it made no difference.
2. No matter what I have tried, the windoze box cannot see the linux box by
its hostname.
Any firther clues as to where to look for solutions would be much
appreciated.
TIA,
Ian
