Mandrake? Not tamper, sabotage. They are evil, or at least a few of
their developers are. And they don't have any quality control to
suppress the evil developers.
In the case of XEmacs, they broke the console handling in the C code
to make XEmacs conform to their idea of the right key map. There are
at least three ways (xkbd, xmodmap, .emacs) to do this in
configuration files, but nooooo....
If their distro policies suit your needs, go for it (that's what free
software is about), but be aware that patching their code is probably
dicey, and upstream projects are likely to say "Mandrake? Most bugs
are introduced by them---so get them to fix it."

And do what it says.... ;-)
