I've finally tried to do 'soundon' to turn on the sound.  got the
usual head banging noise that hurts.

After doing 'opt/kde/bin/kmix' the sound mixer started up and I was
able to turn the microphone down a bit.  I am now playing Beethoven
Symphony No: 3 Eroica.  

Problem is the microphone is still switched on and I can't work out
how to cut it altogether.  OSS sound in SuSE 6.4.
