Is this just a slam at Debian, or does Debian really do something
different that you know about?

The reason I put that "left-shift" instruction in there is that I
_have_ seen distros (not Debian) that crank the lilo: prompt delay
down to near zero on the theory that anybody who needs single-user
mode probably can hit the left-shift key to get the lilo: prompt,
while their target users have the patience and manual dexterity of
2-year-olds.[1]

Footnotes:
[1] Which doesn't describe any Linux users I know; I really wonder
why developers keep making distros on that assumption.
