The laptops are pretty conventional....the Deskpros etc use some non-standard 
technology to store the information normally dealt with by the BIOS chip & 
the CMOS RAM. Actually, settings are stored in 2 places in most Compaq 
systems - non-volatile memory on the system board and also on the riser card. 

The "soft bios" interface of the F10 Setup program allows access to only 
those bits of the system which Compaq wants you to see. No tinkering with 
low-level parameters here. Most of the time you'll get away with it, but 
you'll find that sooner or later you run up against Compaq's Big Brother 
attitude. Hence our friend with the Presario....
