	Well, I have finally disregarded to blame it on the software, as
lazy souls like yours faithfully like to do. I have done one of the most
obvious things: just boot off the CD-ROM, and it doesn't work. So it's
probably some cable or something gone amok. Thanks anyway for all
replies, I have learned a bit about CD-ROMS :-) But for the time being,
I shall use samba to access the drive on another computer (transparent
networks are good :-D)
