Yeap, I've got /dev/hdc (CD/DVD ROM) and /dev/hdd (CDRW) on the same
interface, although the harddisks are on their own ATA-100 interfaces.

So I obviously agree with your arrangement.

However, I'd be surprised if it caused any bother. I've a long IDE
cable running to the CD drives, and I've used disks on it too, without
any problems.

My rig is Gigabyte 6BXD mobo (BX Chipset/SMP) and a couple of Maxtor disks.
