[Sheflug] OT: Possible Relocation to Sheffield, many questions following:
Hello Sheffielders,
I have an opportunity to move to a different job in Sheffield, I
currently live in the US.
It kind of caught me off guard and now I have to make a decision
within the next 12hrs, so please respond as soon as possible. I'll be
more than happy to buy you a pint or two should I make it to the UK
respectively assist in buying PC hardware and ship it should I stay in
the US.
Question 1: How's the housing? I have a wife and 2 kids... how hard would
a moderately sized appartment be to find and how much a month to
expect? (rent / utilities)
Question 2: How are the ISPs? What kind of internet-flatrate offers
are available in Sheffield and how much do they cost (i'm spoilt here,
being connected 24/7) ? Are there areas where it is more likely to be e.g.
DSL-capable? Are any of them *not* Unix-friendly?
E.g. Cox-cable here in the US won't even talk to you anymore once they know
you use Linux. Stupid, but don't ask me why...
Question 3: What's a usual salary in Sheffield for a Unix-sysadmin with 5yrs of
on-the-job experience? That's not the job I was offered, far from it
actually, but I know what they pay here and I want to compare what's
being paid in the IT-market over there.
Question 4: How are the schools? Public schools any good? I expect
them to be better than US public schools, but with school-aged kids I
need to ask...
I better don't bombard you all with tons of questions, but any other
general advice would be very welcome.
I apologize for being off-topic, but should I move, I'd for sure join
your LUG, so I hope it's ok. Please respond soon.
Thank you very much!
