thanks, that sorted the problem (not a real one, as your message points 
out).

It's a bit embarrassing after all that: the card was not connected 
properly.  Now that is sorted out, CDs play without problems.  I am 
still wondering about the sound quality though: sometimes it clicks and 
buzzes wierdly on playing MP3s (at high sample rates) but there is no 
distortion with CD sound.  I'll have to do some more tests to find out 
if it is really the card or just a problem with the samples or possibly 
insufficient bandwidth.
