Are you definitely sure it's hanging? After lo I would expect eth0 - so it's
concievable that the machine is waiting to bring that up (if you had it
configured for DHCP and there were no servers, that would cause a long pause
which might appear as a hang for example).

You might find it worth turning it on and leaving it for ten minutes. If it
hasn't booted by then, it's hung ;) But, it sounds like the kernel has
booted fine, in which case it sounds strange that the problem would be
caused by a faulty kernel.
