Success has rewarded my efforts... almost :) My modem was on ttyS1, not ttyS0; thanks
for pointing out the difference to me Chris. It now dials (and even the speaker works
;) ) and connects, and stays connected for exactly 30 seconds. I then get the error
message - PPP Deamon died (PPP Negotiation failed). Could someone tell me which
configuration file I may have overlooked, please? The only ones I think can be
responsible are ppplogin.conf or account1. These scrips are as follows :

etc/ppp/ppplogin.conf :
defaults
    local-ip 10.10.10.1
    change-pasword     allow
    command    /usr/sbin/pppd srtscts passive mru 296

user    Pokir
    remote-ip 10.10.10.2

etc/ppp/starter/links/account1 :
[Account]
Description=btfree
Authentication=PAP
PhoneNumber=08089933001
DNS=194.73.73.94 194.73.73.95
Username=[MyUserName]
Password=[MyPassword]

(the user name and password fields are filled in appropriately)
