This was my first thread on ShefLUG - my connection dropped a lot and
was slow - ah those were the days :-)

/usr/sbin/pppd srtscts passive mru 296

Not srtscts - should be crtscts.

My /etc/ppp/options file is:

lock
mru 1500
mtu 1500
crtscts
persist

Seems to work OK.
