Well, I eventually managed to get into a bash shell only to find that for 
some reason, there doesn't seem to be a text editor on the system any more. 
I'm beginning to think something pretty dreadful has happened and I'm going 
to have to do a full reinstall anyway. However, before I do that, if I can 
make a bootable floppy with joe or something on it, I should be able to 
follow your previous instructions.

How do I make a bootable floppy though? In one of Eric Moore's reply to a 
different thread I posted, he refers to mkrescue but I can't find this on 
my other SuSE box and it doesn't seem to be on the installation media anywhere.

Sorry for being a complete and utter muppet.
