Nope! sda5 is the first partition on the drive, so it starts at cylinder
1 and ends at cylinder 31.

Indeed this was the solution. Thanks! In fact, I didn't fix it myself,
but following your suggestion Jim Methley tried installing GRUB (it was
his first time with GRUB) and it worked after a small amount of
first-time-grub-user level fiddling.

I guess that something (plenty to choose from: SCSI disks, wrong BIOS
settings, wrong SCSI BIOS settings, wrong jumper settings, typos)
screwed up the LILO installation in a fairly intractable way. GRUB's
sorted it, though. Despite the fact that I still haven't got to grips
with GRUB properly, I reckon I'll select it for new installs at Access
Space.
