ext3 creates it's journal in two ways. If the disk is unmounted at the
time, it creates it on a special inode IIRC. If the disk is in use, it
creates a .journal file in the root of the filesystem on that disk.

I don't believe there is any practical different between the two, except
that having a .journal might be more susceptible to rm ;)
