Hmm. I don't think it's an NIS issue, it looks more like a PAM issue.
Quite what, I don't know - I've never used NIS :) I'm surprised that 
you've managed to login like that though - it seems your system is able
to authenticate the user, but forgets the username, which is rather 
strange.
