It's a long time since I've used NIS, and never under linux, but things to
check:
1) that the passwd entry in /etc/nsswitch.conf includes nis;
2) that 'ypcat -k passwd.byuid' gives out a sensible listing,
3) that 'ypmatch 500 passwd.byuid' gives an entry.
If all those work, then I dunno.
