Sounds serious :( Is http://www.rpm.org/hintskinks/repairdb/ any help?

Anything that does anything related to software installation on your system
requires a functioning rpm subsystem. If that's not working, nothing above
it will do. Stick to playing with the command line rpm until you get
that working, the gui stuff might not fail as gracefully and could cause
more problems.
