I've tried this but it doesn't seem to make any difference. Even if I
try and open "Add/Remove Packages" GUI in Gnome, I don't get anywhere -
it checks the status of the system and then the window disappears. This
used to give me the option of installing rpms that I chose not to during
the Red Hat installation. 

I am also having problems with up2date. This just hangs and I have to
kill it. May be the two problems are related.
