Re: [Sheflug] Re: Gentoo Linux
It's just another Linux distro; just harder to use and more difficult to
install. The hardware support will be more-or-less identical, modulo
perhaps some of the non-free drivers.
That's quite a harsh assessment of Gentoo! It is at the end of the day
another Linux distro, and so all the hardware supported by any other
distro is supported by this one. You do have to put a little more work
into getting it running, but you do learn a lot in the process.
If you are not the type who is willing/able to put in the time then
Gentoo probably isn't for you. It does have an amazing package
management system though, and a very active community. You can use
modules for most of the closed source drivers - usually by just typing
something like emerge nforce-net etc...
It tends to have the latest versions of software available in the
portage system very quickly, and you choose what is installed and what
options those packages are installed with. It is obviously not for
everyone - especially people who do want to just tell it to install
everthing and leave it at that so that stuff will be there if they need it.
It's a great distro for those who would like a minimal install and a
greater degree of control over what goes into their OS. It is also a
great distro for those who like getting their hands dirty but don't have
the time to spend every waking moment maintaining their OS (LFS)... I
like it anyway ;) I don't think I am the only one...
