This a debian distribution by Mepis and has unstable in the sources list. He 
seems to have scripts builtin that overwite any editing that you do. All your 
above help has been to no avail. 
	I'm going to wash my hands of this I think and install a standard debian 
installation. Although I remember problems of setting up sound etc with the 
basic setup. I think I've got version debian 3.01 not sure if thats the 
latest. I could install via ftp as I have broadband, not sure if that causes 
more problems or not.
