i found a nice artical about this some time back. i rember it said
that if /dev/dsp is not writable by the the user or group your user is
assigned to, then you mikes wont work.
as for testing the mike, get some GNU wave recorder. can't think of
one off hand.
that's the best i can do with my limited knowledge.
