Re: [sheflug] insurance - offtopic?

Last time I looked professional indemnity was a nightmare for IT
practitioners, mainly because of the amount of damage we can do (he he)
and the quotes vary horribly.
To protect against some elements make sure you have a solid contract for
your services and make sure you document meetings and such, this will
help you to some degree but obviously not against a negligence claim.
I use HISCOX (Get a quote at https://professions.hiscox.com/) for cover
and pay about £270 a year for £1,000,000 worth of cover including legal
costs with a £500 excess... So they might be worth looking at. (This
isn't an endorsement though, I've never had to claim on it..) Previously
I had cover from Royal & Sun (Cant remember who the broker was) and it
was about £700 for the same level of cover, so I guess the best advice
is to get a lot of quotes.
A colleague of mine used to get insurance for specific jobs, for a one
off fee and just add it to his invoice, I will try and get some details
on that for you if you want, I think it was more expensive in the long run.
Finally regardless of whether you are working with OSS or other software
make sure that you are insured for what you do... Make sure that the
people you work for sign off on the GPL (Get them to agree to the terms
of it), And make sure you have a contract that limits your liability as
much as possible. Oh, and go to your local CAB or business link, they
tend to be pretty good with some of the technicalities.
Thanks
Andy Halsall
