I have to agree with Lesley - LaTeX is the way to go. Having said that a 
friend of mine used LyX in his final year at university and produced 
some nice reports with it. I would recommend Kile for editing LaTeX 
documents but as far as I could remember you used LaTeX style files to 
make new templates, but I only ever really used it to help my friend - I 
prefer editing the LaTeX myself and use it to author papers, reports, my 
thesis, A0 posters and LaTeX beamer presentations (one I gave for 
ShefLUG previously was in beamer).
