Yeah, I should have pointed out that I used to use LyX (well, KLyX, but
that's before I saw the light about KDE ;) to do all my papers. But I
wasn't really bothered about the layout then.

I've never used LaTeX though - mostly because LyX was around, and I
didn't need to learn the syntax. So, I've no idea:

      * how LaTeX is used within LyX, and how you use LaTeX classes
        (though, given the manual, it seems to be relatively
        straightforward)
      * how to create a LaTeX layout :D

I suspect that the latter is the harder part.

Have you created your own LaTeX classes, and if so, how difficult is it
to do?
