Don't do BT. It's really bad. There is universal agreement about
this. I was using www.zen.co.uk until recently. Couldn't find
anything wrong with them. £25 a month. I've switched over to
www.ukfsn.org to save a bit of money at £16.50 a month. Same quality
of service as Zen Internet. Jan was saying something about
http://www.talktalk.co.uk today. About £16 a month. She said it
wasn't too bad.

Well, everyone's individual mileage will vary (of course) but I have to say that I've been really happy with BT since I switched to them about two years ago. I simply haven't had any problems worth mentioning. I'm out in Totley, and I'm getting a steady 5 mb per second download.
I was with Avensys / Gemsoft for a number of years, and on many levels they were excellent - it's great when you can speak to one of the owners when a problem comes up! But (two years ago, certainly) they weren't able to increase my connection speed from 2 mb per second to 8 mb, so I switched. I believe their problem wasn't technical but business-related - I think I remember them saying that they had to take a (large) minimum amount of capacity from BT (the ultimate bandwidth provider) to offer 8 mb ADSL, and at that time at least they couldn't see their way to doing so.
