[Sheflug] Colour rendering

Hi list,

I've been trying to find a suitable background colour for a website I'm
running (having stripped out all the M$ rubbish from it, in case you
remember a query I had a few weeks ago), and I thought I'd found quite a
decent subdued, pale grey-ish olive yellow. Well, actually, I had, but when
I viewed it on a laptop screen it came out silver!

I admit I hadn't given much thought to the differences between screens, but
this seemed excessive, so I tried it out on a couple of others and found
that they all show either one of those colours or the other; I haven't
found a third variant yet, though I'm now a bit low on screens to try. I
assume that the main difference is in the number of bits used to convey
colours. My development box has this in Xorg.0.log:

(--) NV(0): Chipset: "GeForce 7300 GS"
(==) NV(0): Depth 24, (==) framebuffer bpp 32
(==) NV(0): RGB weight 888
(==) NV(0): Default visual is TrueColor

Is there an easy way to find a colour that is reproduced reasonably
consistently on all those screens out there, or will I just have to put up
with the variation?
