As ever, a few minutes after pressing Send, I found one: KColourChooser. It 
has a range of what it calls Web Colours, which I assume are expected to 
come out more-or-less the same on screens with different colour depths.

After some playing around, I couldn't find a suitable colour, so for the 
moment I've reverted to the original stone colour. People with cheap 
laptops will have to put up with it!
