[Sheflug] Options for a quiet system upgrade?

Sorry if this is off-topic here, but I'd like to know where to go to find an 
answer to this - if someone can point me in the right direction I'll leave 
you all in peace!

For the last five years I've been running a beast of an Armari machine, with 
two Opteron 246s, 4GB of RAM, several disks and so on. Even with sound 
deadening it's horribly noisy, at the risk of domestic disharmony if I'm 
not careful, and I was dismayed to find recently that it consumes something 
like 250W. The excessiveness of this was reinforced when I bought a 
Thinkpad T61 and found that it can do most things faster than the Opteron 
box, and virtually silently too.

So now I want to investigate options for a 64bit motherboard and processors 
but I don't know where to look for quiet ones.
