What does Windows report the free space as? What does df under linux say? Do
they match??

Hmmm. .. given you're having problems under Win and Linux, that rules out
software pretty much I'm afraid - you can treat the ppa driver pretty much
as a clean-room implementation, so that chance of the same bug /
misconfiguration in both is highly unlikely. I do remember something a while
back - try looking up 'click of death' and stuff like that - depending how
old the drive is, it may be relevant: a lot of early(ish) drives had a lot
of hardware failiures, some of which didn't surface until a while after they
were bought. I think the fact that both OS'es have problems makes it
definitely a hardware problem. Is there any info on the drive you can give
us? What type it is? What it's connected to? Any serial no's, etc, might
help track the problem down..

Cheers,

Alex.
