Urk, very very bad. You have a quite old libjpeg installed, and it
looks like somehow the install process updated those links to pint to
the old library. Very strange, I don't understand it.
Now I do (for the cognoscenti). Here's the default target:
all: libjpeg.a cjpeg djpeg jpegtran rdjpgcom wrjpgcom
What that says is that the vanilla package from off the net does not
know how to build .so-style libraries. IIRC doing the usual things
gave the right results, but I don't suppose you would know what "doing
the usual things" means. (It's been a while, I don't remember
either. :)
You are going to have to find a more up-to-date binary package,
preferably from SuSE.

`little ell'd.so.conf, not `big eye'd.so.conf; ditto for ldconfig. I
like LucidaTypewriter for reading code, myself....

Freshmeat isn't the place for what you're looking for. Would you
butcher your own cow? Freshmeat is for people who do the equivalent
with software, or people who are desperate. Do a full web search
before going to freshmeat.
Having said that, I am VERY VERY disappointed in SuSE. Their web site
SUCKS for this purpose. I eventually found a "libjpeg.rpm" under SuSE
6.3 on the FTP site, but who knows what's in it. I also found a ML
message indicating this is a common problem with SuSE. C'est la vie.
You could try Red Hat or Turbolinux's RPMs; these are easily available
on their FTP sites (or were, back in the prehistoric age of 1998 when
I was beta-testing for PHT (now Turbolinux) Japan; I don't do RPMs
anymore, although I often borrow the source code out of SRPMs :).
I will not guarantee they will work on your SuSE system, but they
likely will.
