Can't possibly be necessary ;)

If you like, if your isdn dial-up is still working, and your box has ssh
capability, I  could log on sometime this week and sort it out for you?
It'll have to be after tonight (new years party ;) but it shouldn't take
five minutes. I can't believe you need to reinstall to sort a network
problem out ;) Do a 'tcpdump -i eth0' on *both* machines whilst pinging, in
both directions, and show me what output there is, ignoring any arp stuff
(if you like, set a filter on tcpdump so that src or dest are in
192.168.1.0/24).
