[Sheflug] gnome-panel crash

Hope someone can help - my GNOME environment in RH 8.0 is "stuck".

I had moved the lower menu/tool bar from its default horizontal position to
a vertical position on the right hand side in order to see something lurking
on the Desktop (screen res was set really low at the time).

I then tried to reset the screen res back to 1024 x 768 but gnome-panel now
just keeps hanging. None of the Launcher icons work and right-clicking on
the menu bar doesn't work so I cannot reconfig in X.

Every time I startx, the menu bar remains vertical and I get a message
saying:

"Application "gnome-panel" (process 1578) has crashed due to a fatal error.
(Aborted). Please visit the GNOME Applications Crash Page for more
information."

Needless to say, there is no info at the Crash Page but just a bug submit
page.

The debug app tells me this:

Debug: crashed application
Binary file: gnome-panel
Backtrace was generated from /usr/bin/gnome-panel

I have tried reinstalling gnome-panel, however, the problem is not there -
when I log on as another user, there is no problem with the menu bar or
X-windows.

I have tried deleting this user account and then adding it back in but no
joy there.

Anyone got any ideas?

Can I reconfig X-windows/gnome-panel for this user account somehow?
