You might then consider using Debian Sid, the permanent name of the
unstable distribution, which I am told essentially has you running
Ubuntu without the hand-holding and the like that it provides. Don't get
me wrong, I think Ubuntu is the best way to get people using GNU/Linux,
but if you know what you are doing then Debian Unstable looks like a
good choice.
My desktop is however still stuck on 64-bit Jaunty and I haven't really
had any problems aside from weirdness relating to compiling
applications, because libraries are in different locations. I haven't
noticed any performance increase but then again the only time I have
pushed the system recently was tarring up a 120GB USB drive and I don't
know enough about it all to know if 64-bit would help with that (it
certainly made use of all my 4GB of ram).
