That, and the fact that it's an IO error. Pretty hard to get in software, I

Mmm. Can't really think of anything else to suggest, I'm afraid. If you have
access to a friend's machine, you could swap round the hard drives and see
if your software works on their hardware. Unless the fault is with the HD
(unlikely in the extreme ;)
