Shame on you! :-)
Open Source software is not the poor relation to closed source systems
- in many ways it is superior.
Remember too - Free as in speach, not as in beer.
Although Linux probably cost you £0 (free as in beer) you can also
modify and redistribute the code (to learn from for example) - that's
the free speach aspect of Free software that is more important, IMHO.
Moving on from the philosophical rant...
The reason the sound is "crap" might be something as simple as the
fact that the default bass setting might be a little too high - I know
that it distorts my speakers until I bring it down a little.
If that isn't it, the problem will probably something equally trival
that someone will more than likely to be able to help you out with.
