Well there are some good books out there and it is helpful to have one 
or two of them to help you understand LaTeX as well as writing classes, 
styles and packages.  But these are skills that require some time 
investment to acquire.

If picking up a book is an anathema to you and you don't have the budget 
to farm the work out on the platform you require then you should look at 
Open Office Writer.  It's a 'Word clone' to coin a phrase but it will do 
the job every bit as well as Word can.   But nowhere near as well as 
LaTeX or LyX can.
