Personally, I'd recommend using 'testing' rather than unstable. If you use
unstable, then you should be prepared for things to break every now and
then. Testing does *occasionally* break as well, but is generally quite
reliable. I personally stopped using unstable for day-to-day work some time
ago, and now run testing on my desktops; my use of unstable is now
restricted to chroots/VMs for package building and QA purposes.


For those who don't know how testing works: packages normally migrate from
'unstable' to 'testing' after a few days (between 2 and 10, depending on the
severity of the update). There are some exceptions to this rule: packages
won't migrate if they've got high-severity bug reports open, or if they make
some other package uninstallable.
