However, just because not many sites advertise on the official mod_perl site, doesn't mean that there is nobody running mod_perl. Due to my scoop experience, I know of several that will run mod_perl for you.
No, indeed. And I think it's sad, in fact, that there isn't a lot more
mod_perl support around: mod_perl is great technology, and most of what
lets it down is the fact that it's a pain to install and an even greater
pain to support in an ISP environment. I think that's one of the reasons
PHP got so popular so quickly - it really is pretty effortless to
install and maintain.
Ok. I have to step in again here. Installing mod_perl and setting it up takes a few minutes to do, and is easy. I don't know how anyone could describe the process as a "pain". It's not difficult to support in an "ISP environment" the issue is with "virtual hosting environments". You really need a separate copy of Apache running for each mod_perl virtual host. Again, not a difficult thing to set up but it takes time and resources. Most sys-admins that have had experience with perl/apache setups haven't had experience with mod_perl/apache setups so it gets ignored.
